Julep Maven Box- Round 1 & 2

ROUND #1: I tried Julep polishes previously in the Summer of '12, but I was not thrilled. I received the "It Girl" introductory box this Summer when I used the code "MAVENINTRO" to get the box for one penny + shipping and handling.
This was my favorite color from the box. It is Sasha, a cantaloupe  color which was perfect for the Summer. This polish had a thicker texture, dried in a reasonable amount of time, and lasted about 3 days with out chipping.
I was really hoping that I would love these two colors, for they were the reasons I picked this box. The fuchsia, Lily, I believe has the texture of a neon polish. It also changed color/got lighter after it dried. The yellow, Daisy, was not a flattering shade on me and even with a base coat it still stained my nail yellow. It had a texture similar to Sasha.
When I called the Julep number to cancel and the girl asked "why?" I told her about the texture and color change of the polishes and she suggested that I "add a few drops of nail polish remover to the bottle of polish". I'd have to assume that she is just a girl in a cubicle somewhere taking calls and not someone educated in the nail-polish department because nail polish remover DESTROYS polish...that's its job.
So for Round 1, I was not thrilled. I only paid 1 penny+ shipping and I did get one polish I liked so I did not make out too poorly.

ROUND #2:  Here it is, several months later, and I decided to try Julep again. I used another penny code and I also bought a green creme polish some Quick Dry Polish Drops, and I choose a sample of The Best Pedi Creme Ever. It says you can notice a difference with 1-2 uses. I only had enough in this packet for 1 use. I rubbed it on my feet and covered them with my spa socks before I went to bed. It smells fresh and clean. I did notice that my heels were softer the next day and I did not see any evidence of dry skin.
Next, I painted my nails with a non-Julep polish and used the Quick Dry Polish Drops. These smell amazing! It must be why the box smelled so good. They worked wonderfully too! I did 2 drops on all my finger nails and when I bumped them about a minute later the polish did not budge. So glad I bought this. The bottle is a pretty good size so it should last a while.

I had not yet received the October box that I purchased for a penny on October 13th after waiting for 2 weeks. I got an email on October 27th, saying that my account has been charged $19.99 for November's box.....hmm. I sent an email asking where my October box is. I wanted to see if I liked the box products this time around before I committed to getting a regular priced box. I did not have a response by 5 pm on Tuesday the 30th so I gave them a call. This time I got a very helpful young lady who told me that my penny box was cancelled as they only allow one per household. I explained to her about the 2 polishes I got this Summer that were a disappointment and the not-so-smart suggestion from customer service last time, so she offered to send me out another polish to try. How nice is that! I chose Eva which is a raspberry creme polish. I decided to keep the November box I was charged for since there are smokey peacock and a deep purple polishes and I really want to see these colors in person.

I got the email with my tracking number on October 30th for both my sub box and the complimentary polish and they both showed up on November 2nd. That was pretty quick shipping! Upon opening the boxes, I was pleasantly surprised by the colors and how the boxes were packed.

Here is the complimentary box with Eva. There is also a sample of the Pedi Creme that I liked and some candy corn. I had gotten all the way through October with out eating ANY candy corn....oh well :) Yummmmm
Here is November's Maven box which had Donna and Trina, 3 samples of the One-Step Polish Remover pads and a 4 oz tub of Pink Grapefruit Body Frosting.  Each polish is valued on the website as $14 or if you are a member $11.20. The tub of body frosting is valued at $18 or for members $14.40, and I could not find the polish remover pads for sale on the website. This box contained $46 worth of product, or $36.80 as a member. When I did the math this polish per fraction of an ounce, it is WICKED expensive. Now I pay a lot of money for butter London polishes, but if this came in the same sized bottle it would be over $20! YIKES!

I first tried the body frosting. It smells juicy and zesty, just like pink grapefruit. It is a nice thick consistency so it will be great for Winter. I do feel like it is over priced though. Carol's Daughter Shea Souffle is $5 less expensive than this and they both have shea butter and essential oils.

Donna was the first up because I could not wait to try out this peacock blue! In person, it is gorgeous. The consistency of this polish was lovely, it was not overly thick or runny, it applied well, 2 coats are needed to make it opaque and even, and it dried really quickly. My only complaint is the long stem for the brush. It holds a lot of polish and I kept forgetting to wait an extra second or two to let more polish drip off so I accidentally got a huge drop of polish right on the tip of my big toe. The next time I was quick enough to catch it. That will be something I will need to get used to. Also, when removing this from my fingers, it dyed my cuticles and fingers blue. It took a bit of work to get it all off but with some cuticle oil and a tooth brush it came off.

The other polish, Trina, is a gorgeous shimmery plum color. It also had a great texture and was almost opaque with one coat. I only showed one nail in the picture because I made a mess while I was applying this. Again, the long stem of the polish brush caught me off guard and dripped some polish on me.

Since this box I purchased the Best Pedi Prep kit as well as the Best Manicure kit. The glass nail file was a let down, but I did like the cuticle oil that comes in a little roll on bottle.

So my review for Julep boxes right now are about 50/50. Some products and polishes are a hit, and some of them are a miss. I am cancelling this subscription for now, but that does not mean I will not try it again in the future....
